James Curry, MA, LCSW, Albuquerque

JC, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and alcohol and drug abuse counselor with over 22 years experience, are LGBTQI*-affirming and extensively trained and oriented to cognitive-behavioral therapies and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. They have received training and certifications in modalities as varied as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Motivational Interviewing, CRAFT, EMDR, Integrative-Based Stress Reductions (IBSR), Prolonged Exposure, Functional Analytical Psychotherapy, and Ericksonian Hypnosis.

JC’s practice is essentially mindfulness-based. Over the years we have worked, in varying capacities, with children, adolescents, teens, adults, couples and families. We utilize our advanced chronological age, training and experience to assist the people we get to work with to engage with their thoughts, feelings, impulses and actions in a radically accepting, mindful way. We are not looking at these experiences and sensations, even the painful and distressing ones, so much as problems or symptoms to get rid of, but to instead give ourselves permission and agency to slow things down, to reflect and participate in the moment for what it is as opposed to what we want it to be, and to engage with the process without getting too caught up in the outcome.

We believe that therapy is a journey and that the client is first and foremost the expert in their own lives. We will meet you where you’re at, with the hope and intention of finding ways to help you increase mental flexibility while decreasing avoidance, in order to increase your capacities to experience painful or distressing thoughts and emotions while still engaging in actions that align with your personal values.
